Painting with Wool

There are two styles of layout for nuno felting that I use. One style uses a layout of dyed Margellan silk which is very sheer and has a lovely shine. The silk is laid out in an abstract pattern, embellishments are added to the design and merino wool is placed over the silk. The many colors of silk used in such a piece have a lot of texture and can be bright and playful.

A second method is to lay out the wool on Habotai silk or chiffon. Often color is the driver for the design. As I lay out the merino, I begin to imagine the flow and a picture emerges. The design evolves as I work and I add embellishments to give the wool painting pizzazz. Designs can be abstract, pictures of nature with flowers and vines, birds and butterflies. Or the designs can be geometric—cityscapes, swirls and pinwheels, rectangles, squares, and triangles.
