Undulation is a wavelike motion, a gentle rising and falling in the manner of waves. This feeling can be created in a scarf, collar or shawl with wool. For scarves and collars, this effect is created by laying wool fibers in the center of the scarf or collar from one end to the other. Then edge fibers are laid at right angles. As the lengthwise fibers shrink, they cause the edges to ruffle. During the fulling stage, the edges of the scarf are stretched along their length to create deeper ruffles. In a somewhat similar way, a shawl can be created. Using a center length of silk chiffon as the base, wool is laid in layers along the edges. As the wool is manipulated, it firms up and the edges may be stretched to enhance the undulation of the wool. The chiffon scarf floats on your shoulders, providing some warmth and a finished look to complement both informal and formal occasions.
